Pupils’ Most Popular Experience
Boudicca vs. Romans sees a Roman Centurion and Iceni Warrior magically travel forward in time to your school to take pupils on a full day learning adventure, placing them at the heart of Queen Boudicca’s rebellion against the Romans!
The Magic Begins Before We Even Visit Your School…
…with a set of pre-visit films you’ll show them in advance of our visit, including our famous Time Machine App – this sophisticated film is designed to appear as if the teacher is controlling a Time Machine App on their phone or iPad device, projecting it onto the screen. You should hold a device in your hand and swipe left or right as the time machine goes through its timeline of famous events in British history.
The film explains some of the background story of the experience before appearing to generate two historical characters from a vortex. These characters then announce their visit to your school… which from experience usually causes the excitement levels to hit the roof!

Then Comes the Visit to Your School…
Classrooms and school halls will be transformed into magical learning environments packed with lights, resources and artefacts as the red of Rome battles against the blue of Boudicca.
Your day will begin with a heart-thumping dramatic piece, introducing the pupils to the two characters and their mission for the day: Help the Iceni tribe identify and exploit Roman weaknesses to eventually rise up and rebel in the name of Queen Boudicca!

How It Works
Pupils will go back and forth between the two characters throughout the school day as they take part in a number of interactive, highly engaging sessions designed to enrich their understanding of Roman Britain and immerse themselves in the drama:
- Become Roman soldiers, following the Latin drills barked by the Centurion as they try on the armour, perform drills using swords and shields before forming a testudo formation, a Roman military formation often used in battle.
- Turn into Iceni warriors, chanting their Queen’s name while making their own precious tribal treasures and applying the sacred paint to their face.
- Help tell mythical tales of druids and deities in mystical storytelling sessions, expanding pupils’ understanding of Roman life and beliefs.
- Unpack the kit of a travelling soldier, handling real Roman artefacts that bring Roman history to life.
- Understand Roman social status as pupils go from soldier, to slave, to gladiator in this process drama-inspired by the life of Spartacus.
- Prepare to rebel against the Romans and test their aim with our javelin throwing activity, closely resembling Roman empire weapons used in battle.
Throughout the experience, pupils will uncover the daily life in Roman times, from Roman military tactics to the daily struggles of civilians. This immersive learning experience draws pupils into the heart of the Roman empire, helping them understand the pivotal role the Romans played in shaping Britain’s history.

The Benefits of Learning Through History Experiences

These hands-on activities, from sword drills to crafting tribal treasures, engage different learning styles and improve pupils’ use of language and key vocabulary.
Active Learning
This active learning approach is especially beneficial for children’s activity days or history experiences UK, where engaging with the material can help pupils better grasp complex historical concepts like the Roman empire weapons and military formations, such as the testudo. Experiential workshops also encourage teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills – all valuable lessons that extend far beyond history class.
Moreover, our interactive workshops build confidence in pupils who struggle to engage with learning in a formal classroom setting, making them the most active participants during these immersive experiences. Whether they are participating in history re-enactments or learning about deadliest wars in history, pupils will find these topics more accessible and memorable than traditional lessons.
Alongside our Roman Soldier Experience, we offer other captivating workshops, such as the Ancient Greek Experience, where pupils explore the contributions of ancient Greece to education and history. They’ll try on Spartan armour, form the famous phalanx and learn about ancient Greek history while defending Greece from Persian invaders. These experiences are designed to complement the Roman KS2 curriculum, giving pupils a comprehensive understanding of how different ancient civilizations shaped the world.

For teachers seeking more history workshops for schools, our Boudicca vs. Romans experience provides a dramatic and interactive dive into the Roman empire.
